In Our Own Voice: Living with Mental Illness

  • Panel of presenters who are affected by mental illness
  • Enriches the audience’s understanding of how people with serious disorders cope with the reality of their illnesses while recovering and reclaiming productive lives
  • Presentation to educate and increase awareness about mental illness

NAMI Faithnet

  • Faith and spirituality are essential elements of healing and recovery for some with a mental illness
  • Consists of NAMI members, clergy and congregation and congregations of all faith traditions coming together to create a supportive faith community
  • Online community which offers links to an abundance of resources such as: inspirational poems, prayers and support groups

Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Meetings

  • In Wood County
  • Established in 1988 in Memphis
  • Partnership between police, the mental health system and advocates for people affected by mental illness
  • 32 hours of training (in Wood County)
  • Goals: Understand signs and symptoms of mental illness and co-occurring disorders
  • Recognize when the signs and symptoms represent a crisis situation
  • Safely de-escalate individuals experiencing behavioral health crises
  • Utilize community resources and diversion strategies that are available to provide emergency assistance

Mental Health First Aid

  • 8 hour training course
  • Teaches individuals how to identify and respond to an individual experiencing a mental health crisis
  • The knowledge learned is applicable to real life situations
  • ALGEE: The Action Plan
  • Assess for risk of suicide or harm
  • Listen nonjudgmentally
  • Give reassurance and information
  • Encourage appropriate professional health
  • Encourage self-help and other support strategies
